AHA Tournament – Sunday 25 August 2013 – Central Coast Youth Club

DSC08140It has been over 2 years since we had our last AHA Tournament. There have been many requests to do another tournament so we are going to run one in August later this year. Student participation is vital to the continued hosting of these kinds of events.

DSC08142Don’t forget, the tournament is not just about sparring, there are many other areas you can compete in. Many students have improved in leaps and bounds through their preparation for the tournament especially in the areas of self-defence, cat rolls and patterns.

Also you will meet many other Hapkido students from other clubs. So find a self-defence partner and start practicing. Ask your instructor for help with your routine – you will find this a challenging and creative process.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADate: Sunday 24 August 2013

Time: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm

Location: Central Coast Youth Club, Washington Avenue, Niagara Park NSW, (Central Coast)

AHA Student Handbook – Sixth Edition is now available

Many, many yeaHandbookCoverrs ago we used to issue a Student Handbook when students joined – some of you may even remember the blue and before that, the black handbooks!!

Well despite the advent of modern on-line platforms like Facebook and Youtube, we have received many requests from students wanting to actually have a document they can read. Hapkido has a rich history, many concepts and principles that are quite involved and cannot be conveyed in a quick 2 minute video or in Twitter window.

The Student Handbook has also been updated to reflect where we are now and to explain to students how we got here.

Some clubs will also have a club-specific version of this handbook which will include local information and history. Ask your instructor.

The AHA Student Handbook available here is a generic version. Here is a summary of the contents:

  • Introduction to Hapkido
  • Choosing a martial art
  • Comparison of Hapkido to other martial arts
  • What does “Hapkido” mean?
  • Philosophy of Hapkido
  • Techniques of Hapkido
  • Goals of Hapkido training
  • Training Attitude
  • Membership Oath
  • Danjun Exercises
  • Method of Danjun
  • Elements of Risk
  • Etiquette
  • Explanation of Belt Rankings
  • Glossary of Korean Terms
  • Summary of what you will learn
  • History of Hapkido
  • Founders of modern Hapkido
  • History of Hapkido in Australia
  • Connections to Korea

Click below to download the AHA Student Handbook (in PDF format) – enjoy.

NOTE: We have now enabled printing on this publicly available PDF file.

Who is going for their next degree in 2013? – it’s a team effort!!

The following people have registered their intention to attempt to grade for their next Black Belt Degree in 2013. The journey of a black belt can be quite lonely and there is a long way between goals. So if one of these people is in your club then why not take an interest in their progress, Ask them how they are preparing, maybe even offer your time and encouragement to help them prepare.

It takes the whole club to make a good black belt – not just the instructor and the student – so don’t just sit back and watch – be part of their success.

Minimum Time between gradings for Black Belts

Black belt techniques are usually more difficult than the coloured belt techniques and require a lot of time to get right. The following times are guidelines only and indicate how much time is normally taken to learn and perfect the techniques of each grade. It is common for black belts to take 10 years or longer to achieve their 4th Degree Black Belt.

  • 1st Degree to 2nd Degree – 2 years of training
  • 2nd Degree to 3rd Degree – 3 years of training
  • 3rd Degree to 4th Degree – 4 years of training
  • 4th Degree to 5th Degree – 5 years of training, etc…

Good luck to all pre-graders – train hard – fight easy!!

Chris "Norris" pays a surprise visit to Sutherland Dojang

Chris NorrisChris “Norris” a famous martial arts celebrity dropped in to train with Mitchell Wetherell and the students of the Sutherland Hapkido dojang.

Chris Norris is famous his tough guy roles that he has played in many movies and even went up against Bruce Lee in one of his movies.

Chris Norris is a regular visitor to the Sutherland Hapkido Dojang so hopefully we will see more Hapkido moves in his movies – keep an eye out for them.

Thanks to Liz for the photo – a treasured momento of that evening.
